They have smaller eyes, longer bodies, and seem to be a bit more active in terms of swimming activity. Watching their shimmering gold bodies glide back and forth across the sand searching for food, and occasionally doing laps around a face of glass really draws one to this species. Unfortunately their beautiful gold sheen does not show up well in photos but is truly a sight to see in person. The birds lay their eggs in the nests of other species, letting them rear the eggs and expend their energy in raising the chicks. The Cuckoo Cat mimics this behavior using the mouths of cichlids! During the spawning of mouth-brooding cichlids, the catfish will quickly spawn on top of the newly deposited cichlid eggs, which are all subsequently scooped up by the female. Unluckily for the cichlids, the Synodontis eggs hatch sooner and at a larger size than the cichlid eggs, allowing them to prey on the cichlid eggs upon hatching in the mother's mouth. Wild specimens are intolerant of water that isn't cool, soft, and acidic but due to the panda Hoplisoma's popularity and ease of breeding, almost all specimens in the hobby are captive bred and much hardier than their wild counter parts. That was until another population was discovered in the Rio Itenez in 2003. In both areas, this fish can be found inhabiting tannin-stained small tributaries, flooded forests, creeks, and streams with lots of fallen branches and botanicals along with mild flow. Aquarists have found them to be much more tolerant of and actually preferring warmer temperatures compared to their cousins. This hardiness, however, does not extend to their tolerance of pH or water hardness causing them to require soft, acidic water especially when working with wild caught fish. Bushynose plecos are cave spawners where males will choose a small cave where he will chase females into to spawn. Once the female has laid eggs, it will be left up to the male to guard the cave and keep the eggs clean as the female leaves. They fan the eggs with their fins to keep fresh water flowing over them to help prevent them from fungusing and ensuring they get plenty of oxygen. Once the eggs hatch, the male will keep the fry inside the cave until they have absorbed their yolk sack and have become free swimming. This high level of parental care is fascinating to watch and is also why it is usually best to leave the eggs with the father to care for rather than removing them.

Remarks: Chocolate bushynose are the closest to their wild-type coloration and are the classic bushynose pleco. Few catfish can compare to their striking white bodies and fins covered in black zebra stripes making for some incredible contrast. Their small size also adds to their desirability as it makes it much easier to house them compared to other rare but large plecos. Despite their popularity, the L046 zebra pleco is fairly uncommon in the hobby as it is critically endangered in the wild due to construction of dams and tends to breed rather infrequently in captivity. However, more efforts have thankfully been being made, including here at Imperial Tropicals where we have had a breeding colony for a number of years, to increase their numbers among the captive population.

The L046 zebra pleco is a typical Hypancistrus in regards to their care in captivity. They come from rocky areas of pristine, heavily oxygenated, warm, soft, and acidic water. It has been noted that they are surprisingly tolerant of a somewhat broader range of parameters in regards to hardness and pH compared to other sensitive plecos. However, they are unforgiving when it comes to water quality, oxygen levels, and temperature. If any of these are not kept at acceptable levels, the L046 zebra pleco will decline in health and eventually die. Using a high quality filter with a high flow rate along with a heater and frequent water changes will help keep these plecos happy and healthy. Like all known Hypancistrus, the L046 zebra pleco is a carnivore so they must be fed a varied diet high in protein. If kept in groups less than at least 5-6 fish, it will cause them to become very stressed resulting in the fish hiding even more and even stop eating in some cases. Notably, these small plecos are rather shy even when it comes to eating so they should not be kept with any fish that are overly boisterous, aggressive, or large enough to fit them in their mouths such as large cichlids. While they can be kept in a peaceful community set up with fish that prefer the same parameters, L046 zebra plecos are best kept alone, otherwise careful attention should be paid to ensure they are getting enough to eat and are not getting bullied.

While the L046 zebra pleco is a gregarious species, some territorial aggression can pop up among males when they are spawning. To reduce territorial fights and help the L046 zebra pleco feel comfortable in the aquarium, plenty of snug, rocky caves should be provided for them to hide in. These caves are also where these fish will spawn if all other conditions are just right. Males will guard the caves they spawn in, keeping the fry inside until they are able to swim out on their own safely. The common bushynose plecos you see available today are likely line-bred from A. cirrhosus, but there is a chance hybridization with other Ancistrus species occurred at some point. Their common name is derived from the long and elaborate tentacles that develop on the faces of males. The bigger the "beard" as some call it, the more dominant the male. Females will occasionally develop bristles as well along the edges of their face making it difficult to differentiate young males from females. These bristles are tempting for nippy and aggressive fish so this combined with bushynose plecos not having much armor compared to other species is why they should not be housed with nippy or aggressive fish. The pleco itself can pose a danger in the case of fish trying to swallow them as they have spines on their fins that they will flare out if being attacked to prevent the fish from eating them. This can result in the fish choking and the loss of both it and the pleco if the pleco remains stuck in the mouth of the fish.

Bushynose plecos do not grow very large and are mostly peaceful so they can fit in well in smaller aquariums. Typically, the only aggression shown tends to be among males fighting over spawning caves. They can be kept with shrimp if the population has been given plenty of time to grow and begin reproducing regularly as the bushynose pleco will prey on them occasionally. While they are omnivores, they prefer to have a diet consisting mostly of vegetable matter and will voraciously feed on algae. Their appetite for algae does not diminish as they grow like in the case of common plecos making them an excellent addition to the cleanup crew in a tank. Typically, plants will not be eaten unless the pleco is starving or the plant is already dying.

Bushynose plecos come in a variety of color forms that have been selectively bred for such as green, blue eye lemon, albino, super red, calico, and even a long-finned variant. They do best when kept in soft, acidic water free of pollutants but are not as picky about this compared to other species. Due to how long this pleco has been bred in captivity, they have become extremely hardy and very prolific making them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists alike.

Breeding bushynose plecos can be very easy so long as all their needs are attended to and spawning sites are provided.

***The pictured fish is the exact fish for sale***

The Hypostomus Luteus is a very rare and special plecostomus from South America. With their dark gray to black bodies decorated with contrasting bright gold/yellow seams along the edges of their dorsal and caudal fins along with similarly colored spots, they are considered one of the most beautiful plecos. These seams and spots are thicker and larger when the fish is younger, reducing in size as they grow but gaining even more of these spots. This changes their pattern from a playful polka-dot one to a more elegant speckle or starry pattern. While many would presume their common name to be derived from their gold/yellow pattern, it actually has a much more interesting story.

When the gold mining industry in the native range, the Rio Xingu, of the L018 gold nugget pleco shut down, locals turned to these abundant plecos as a source of income. Young fish are collected for the aquarium trade while older fish are collected for food. Capturing these fish is far from an easy endeavor, however, as they live in some of the fastest flowing water in the Amazon and hide among the cracks in boulders where they graze on biofilm and algae as well as capture small insect larvae and crustaceans. These conditions consisting of clear, pristine, warm, oxygen-rich waters full of hiding spots should be replicated in the aquarium if one wants to keep L018 gold nugget plecos. If these conditions are not met, this sensitive species will almost certainly decline in health over time and eventually die.

As this omnivorous catfish mainly feeds on algae and vegetable matter, this should consist of a majority of their diet in captivity. This aggression can also be shown to conspecifics so they are best kept as the only pleco in the tank or even in a species only tank. This is due to their large size, typically reaching 8" in captivity but some reaching 12", and their territorial behavior. Despite being a shoaling species, like all synodontis, that does best when kept in groups of three or more, featherfin squeaker cats command large amounts of territory for each fish and thus can get aggressive with their own kind and conspecifics. To combat this, featherfin squeaker cats should be kept in a tank that is at least 150 gallons if keeping just one and at least 250 gallons if keeping a small group.

Their large size and boisterous attitude make the featherfin squeaker cat a good choice for a bottom-dweller that can handle its own against large, African cichlids. Most large haps won't attempt to harass them as long as the catfish isn't smaller than the cichlid by much. If kept in the right conditions, these large catfish can make a beautiful and active addition for the lower levels of a large aquarium. This is because it is unknown where it comes from nor whether it is naturally occurring or not. As it stands, most believe them to either be hybrids or line bred variants of the similar Rineloricaria lanceolata, as all specimens available are captive bred and occasionally a fish with a more natural, brown color shows up in spawns.

Whatever their origin, the red lizard whiptail is an absolutely gorgeous species of whiptail with their colors varying between brown, orange, and red. Typically these colors show up the brightest when the fish is kept in correct water parameters with plenty of hiding spots. They also contrast nicely with green plants. Keeping lighting fairly dim will also help with making them feel safe and encourage the red lizard whiptail to come out of hiding more often. Overly boisterous or aggressive fish can frighten these timid little catfish into hiding so they should only be kept with small to medium sized, more peaceful species such as smaller Corydoradinae, tetra, and Apistogramma species.

The L010a red lizard whiptail catfish is omnivorous, feeding on insect larvae, algae, and tiny microorganisms such as copepods and daphnia in the wild. They have a very fast metabolism, so to remain healthy they must feed constantly. These facts should be taken into consideration when caring for these little catfish, providing them with a varied diet and a steady supply of food. Having lots of rocks and driftwood that facilitate algae and microorganism growth can help ensure they can graze 24/7. This high level of parental care is fascinating to watch and is also why it is usually best to leave the eggs with the father to care for rather than removing them.

Remarks: The Venezuelan Osteogaster is a very eye-catching look-alike of the much more common O. aeneus. The two are best told apart by the fact that the Venezuelan Osteogaster is larger and its range differs from that of O. aeneus in that it is only found in the two coastal closed drainage systems of the Rio Tuy and Lake Valencia where it is the only species of Corydoradinae found there.
