They are known for their rich, black coloration and bright white speckles that looks like the night sky which explains where their common name originates from. This striking coloration is best brought out when this species is kept on a dark substrate under dim lighting. While these fish can be rather shy for a larger cichlid, they still can hold their against most other cichlids. They usually are very peaceful except when spawning during which the pair will claim a rather large territory space. Being piscivorous, despite their typically docile temperament, eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouths.

Starry night cichlids are extremely adaptable in the wild with many different populations inhabiting a wide variety of habitats from cold, high altitude waters, to hot springs, to acidic blackwater pools, to even brackish estuaries. These are being bred in the United States in an effort to keep the species from going extinct.

Scientific Name: Stomatepia pindu

Common Name:

Max Size: 6"

pH: 7.5-8.5

Hardness: Moderate

Temperature: 72-82°

Aggressiveness: Semi-Aggressive

Region of Origin: West Africa

Captive Bred or Wild: Captive Bred

Diet: Flake or pellet

Compatibility: West African cichlids, catfish, larger schooling fish.

Tank Mate Options:

Congo Tetra

Synodontis ocellifer

Synodontis eupterus

Remarks: Slender Buffalo Heads (Steatocranus tinanti) are smaller and more elongate compared to their popular cousins, S. casuarius. The West African mouthbrooder is a stunning fish in both color and behavior, as they are quite spunky for their size. Males are blueish-purple with red bands. Their faces are bright gold, and they have iridescent blue lips. The pelvic fins may darken into black. Females lack most of this color, however males may not color up without females to court or if they are young.

Spawning is similar to most mouthbrooding cichlids. Females hold eggs for a period of approximately two weeks, at which point the fry are mature enough to be free swimming should you want to remove them. Males can tend to harass females so it is good to try to have 3 females for every male. They are a feisty but small species with a lot of the aggression being between males. For this reason, at least a 40 gallon tank with plenty of caves will be needed if one plans to house multiple males together. Their aggression tends to mostly be targeted at more timid or similar looking species so they can be kept with other fish like large African tetras such as congo tetras, as well as smaller, more peaceful mbuna species. With their hardy and robust build, West African mouthbrooders can be a great introduction to African cichlids not found within the major lakes, as well as a candidate for a Congo River biotope.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0764/6524/2419/products/image_6448c3c0-9bcb-4be8-b908-0fcb07f4299c.jpg?v=1688512938
hemichromis-sp-moanda
Moanda Jewel Cichlid

Remarks: Hemichromis sp. "Moanda" is an undescribed species of Jewel Cichlid. possibly the most popular of the cichlids native to Madagascar within the hobby.

That being said, in captivity they do best in water parameters that are fairly neutral all around. Despite their broad range, starry night cichlids are still considered critically endangered in the wild due to habitat destruction and introduction of invasive species.

There is some debate whether Paratilapia polleni and "P. bleekeri" represent two species or one, based primarily on the size and frequency of the spots. It is said Bleekeri tend to be larger and have larger spots than Polleni. The most recent literature suggests that they both belong to P. polleni, but we have kept the "Bleekeri" name for those who collect the various types.

Remarks: The Congo lamprologus is an uncommon dwarf cichlid found in the fast-flowing sections of the Congo River. An easy way to tell the two species apart is to look at the top of the caudal (tail) fin. For N. nudiceps, they have a white or light blue stripe along the top edge of the caudal fin while in N. parilus, they lack this stripe and instead have alternating bands of yellow, red, black, or white vertical stripes.

Care for N. parilus is straightforward as they are hardy and generally peaceful fish compared to their relatives. In the wild, they inhabit rapids in the lower sections of the Congo River basin. Here, the water is mildly warm, well oxygenated, soft, acidic, and has a heavy current that N. parilus have adapted to handle with their slender bodies. For feeding, these omnivores are not very picky and will often eagerly eat anything offered. We recommend a diverse diet of many different prepared, frozen, and live foods to prevent any deficiencies.

Breeding N. parilus is almost as easy as their general care as they spawn in the typical cave-spawning fashion shared amongst others in their genus. Pairs form readily and often maintain strong, life-long bonds. To have the best chances of obtaining a pair, it is recommended to purchase a group of juveniles and allow them to pair off naturally as they grow. A pair of N. parilus that is provided proper parameters, given a healthy and robust diet, and a small cave to spawn in will almost certainly begin breeding. A female that is ready to spawn will become extremely rounded in the belly as she becomes full of eggs. Eggs are laid on the ceiling of the chosen cave where the male will fertilize them. After this, the female will take over care of the eggs, keeping them clean, oxygenated, and safe from predators. When the fry hatch and become free-swimming, the male will join the female in their care. N. parilus fry grow very quick so it isn’t uncommon for the pair to lay another clutch of eggs while their previous brood are still in the same tank making for a prolific breeding project.

This is a BOGO listing!
