Remarks: Gymnogeophagus labiatus come from the Rio Olimar in Uruguay as well as other tributaries in southern Brazil. To induce breeding, brief drops in temperature during parts of the year will be beneficial. A sandy substrate is required as they gather food morsels by sifting sand through their gills.
