When costae tetras turn in the light, they shine with an iridescent blue-green sheen making their appearance all the more eye-catching.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e  Like with most tetras, costae tetras are highly social and live in massive schools in their native, Brazilian habitats within the Rio Sao Francisco and Rio Itapicuru. This social behavior carries over into the home aquarium where this species is known for being one of the tightest schooling tetras within the hobby. To ensure your costae tetras do not become stressed and skittish, keep them in groups of at least 6-8. The larger the school, the more interesting social behaviors, such as courting, you will see. You can further encourage your costae tetras to be bolder by not placing them overly aggressive or predatory species large enough to swallow them. While these active schoolers can be nippy toward tankmates with long fins, similar to barbs, this behavior is lessened when kept in large enough groups. They will be too preoccupied with their own kind to mess with other species in the tank.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e  Costae tetras, especially when captive bred, tend be rather hardy and adaptable in a variety of ways. They are omnivorous and not picky in the slightest, so they will often take to almost any food offered. Feeding them a variety of foods is encouraged to make sure they do not have any deficiencies. Water parameters are another aspect that costae tetras are often lenient about. They are able to tolerate moderate pH and water hardness, however they will do best and show the best coloration when kept in soft, acidic water. Such conditions mimic their natural habitat and further doing so by providing botanicals such as driftwood and plenty of live plants will make your costae tetras feel more at home.
