Their coloration commands attention with a dark brown to jet black base covered in spots that appear white or pink usually depending on lighting. It often gets incorrectly referred to with the L-number of L-331, but this number actually belongs to similar, undescribed species from the Rio Cuiaba. This undescribed species has more numerous and more closely spaced spots compared to the rose-spotted pleco.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eIn the aquarium, the rose-spotted pleco can be a great choice for an algae-eater to live alongside large, South American cichlids. They have a voracious appetite and can make quick work of many different species of algae but still need to have their diets supplemented with wood, fresh vegetables, and high-quality pellets. This appetite coincides with a high metabolism so frequent water changes are necessary to manage their high waste output. It also should be noted they will eat soft plants so they should only be kept with ones with tough leaves such as \u003ci\u003eAnubias\u003c\/i\u003e. These plecos can be rather territorial and boisterous so it is best not to house them with other loricariids unless they are in a very large system.
