Remarks:  This eartheater was previously known to fishkeepers as Geophagus sp. “Aripuana” since its first introduction to the hobby around 2009. It wouldn’t be until a few years later in early 2015 that it would receive a proper scientific name of Geophagus mirabilis. Mirabilis means “extraordinary,” “marvelous,” or “admirable” in Latin, making it a very fitting name for this fish that wows just about anyone with its vibrant coloration. Juvenile fish are a muted tan or silver color with the occasional iridescent blue scale, going through an incredible “glow-up” as they mature. Adult G. mirabilis practically glow they are covered in so many iridescent blue spots and lines complemented by red, orange, yellow, and pink hues around the face and fins. In fact, the sheer amount of patterning adults of this species has on the face in particular is used alongside the 2-6 black spots arranged horizontally along the middle of the body to distinguish this species from others.

The original, temporary name for G. mirabilis, Geophagus sp. “Aripuana,” comes from its original collection point and only known natural habitat, the Rio Aripuanã in southern Brazil. The Dardanelos/ Andorinhas Falls act as a natural barrier keeping G. mirabilis populations upstream and separating it from other members of its genus as it is currently the only known Geophagus species found above the falls. Such a restricted range has led to this species rarely being imported and thus usually only seen in the collections of eartheater collectors. As breeding them is like that of most other Geophagus, a breeding project is very viable and something we encourage anyone looking to keep this stunning eartheater attempt.

Like all eartheaters, Geophagus mirabilis require a sandy substrate due to their earth-eating habits. They sift mouthfuls of sand through their gills, pulling out bits of food to eat. Gravel presents a very high probability of choking or refusing to eat. Also like their close relatives, these fish do best in groups of 4 or more but can also do well in single male and female pairs. Due to their somewhat large size, adult Geophagus mirabilis should be kept in an aquarium that is at least 75 gallons if kept as a single, breeding pair, but 100 gallons or more is needed if they are to be kept with other fish. When spawning, they can become territorial as they are protective parents and they have a good chance of swallowing tank mates that can fit in their mouths. These behaviors should be taken into consideration when planning a tank for these wonderful fish.

Ordering FAQs

Will my fish look like the picture?

The majority of fish on our website will NOT look like their photos upon their unboxing. Fish change in appearance depending on many factors, including mood, age, gender, and social status. Fish will naturally lose color during shipping and may appear faded upon arrival. Pictures are used as examples only. Pictures may be of mature fish with full color or juvenile fish without color. We encourage you to research the species as much as possible prior to ordering in order to familiarize yourself with the various appearances they may take on. Many species have females that look drastically different to their male counterparts, and many juveniles will not have as much color (or different colors) as their adult forms. If you have questions about how the fish will look, please review their information and email us if you have any questions.

How do I know which fish can go together in my tank?

Research the product descriptions on our website and use Google search to help decide which fish can go together. PLEASE do your research and email us if you have any questions.
