Remarks:  The L114 Demini leopard cactus pleco is a massive and beautiful species of Loricariid popular among those with tanks based around monster South American fish. Their common name lends credence to their yellow or tan bodies covered in black leopard spots as well as the sharp armor covering their bodies making them very prickly. This armor is made up of pointed structures called odontodes that help the pleco wedge itself in hiding spaces as well as discourage predators from attempting to eat it. Adding to their unique look, the L114 Demini leopard cactus pleco has a brilliant caudal fin and edge to their dorsal fin showing coloration that ranges from a vibrant gold to a rich orange.

There are actually a few different color variations and localities of this species, each being referred to by a specific L number. This particular locality is known from the Rio Demini and is identified by how the spots on their heads are about the same size as the spots on their bodies. Within their natural range, they inhabit acidic, soft, warm, blackwater areas filled with driftwood. To have the most success with keeping them in captivity, these conditions should be replicated while also providing plenty of aeration as is needed by all Loricariids.

As beautiful as these catfish are, they are not the easiest to care for. L114 Demini leopard cactus plecos can be very aggressive with other loricariids especially if not provided ample territory space and caves. It also can be a challenge to keep up with their needs in regards to parameters as while they produce a lot of waste, they do not tolerate pollutants such as high nitrate levels. Consequentially, they require large, frequent water changes to maintain the pristine conditions they need. Their diet also must be taken into account as they are omnivorous and need a varied diet to remain healthy. Repashy products can be a great option for feeding them. While typically docile toward non-conspecifics, L114 Demini leopard cactus plecos have been reported eating fish that fit in their mouths so care should be taken when choosing tank mates. Larger characins such as chalceus and headstanders can be good options for tank mates that can't be swallowed and won't take away from the beauty of this amazing catfish.

Ordering FAQs

Will my fish look like the picture?

The majority of fish on our website will NOT look like their photos upon their unboxing. Fish change in appearance depending on many factors, including mood, age, gender, and social status. Fish will naturally lose color during shipping and may appear faded upon arrival. Pictures are used as examples only. Pictures may be of mature fish with full color or juvenile fish without color. We encourage you to research the species as much as possible prior to ordering in order to familiarize yourself with the various appearances they may take on. Many species have females that look drastically different to their male counterparts, and many juveniles will not have as much color (or different colors) as their adult forms. If you have questions about how the fish will look, please review their information and email us if you have any questions.

How do I know which fish can go together in my tank?

Research the product descriptions on our website and use Google search to help decide which fish can go together. PLEASE do your research and email us if you have any questions.
